JD Safari Pictures

This will be the only picture from Paris because the animal ones
are more fun to see.

I was trying out a new little panoramic lens on my Nikon which made this an
interesting photo with the L'arc de Triomphe in the center. We had an all day
layover there, so we (Dick, Irene, myself and Bob) toured all over the city.

We were able to go on 7 game drives, getting up each morning at 5. Each one
was an adventure. By the end we could tell the difference between  3 lion
brothers. After each game drive we would stop and our ranger, Piet, and
Nelson, our tracker, would fix coffee, hot chocolate and have snacks. In the
evening we had wine or beer.

Our tracker spotted this leopard from a great distance, which we thought was
amazing. Obviously, he was on the lookout for a good dinner; we later saw
him feasting on a kudu, and later  at a water hole. A female kept flirting
with him, but he just wanted to eat.

This was another highlight. We were driving down a dry riverbed and came
upon a large group of elephants who were all digging holes in the sand to
drink water. They drank and drank, shared with each other and sprayed
themselves. This baby (about 3 months)looks as if it was a first for him. He
had a heck of a time digging holes and had sand all over him.He was using
his trunk rather than his feet.

I find these guys a bit scary. Thank goodness they were not at all
interested in us.

After staying at Inyati Game Reserve, we flew to Cape Town and stayed in the
Stellenbosch winery area. This was taken at the Cape of Good Hope where we
saw ostriches (on the beach), zebras, penquins, and very daring baboons.

This beach had many many penguins sitting on eggs, nesting in the sand. Many
others were up on rocks or waddling at the shoreline.

This baboon had just jumped down on a table and stole someone's chips. A few
minutes before that, a mother baboon with a baby on her back, jumped down
and swiped someone's sandwich. In many areas there are guys who watch for
them and try to keep them away using slingshots.
